Andy Cheng’s artistic journey is a tapestry woven with diverse cultural threads and a profound engagement with the human experience. Born in England to parents from Japan and Hong Kong, Cheng was immersed in a rich blend of Eastern and Western traditions from an early age. This multicultural upbringing instilled in him a unique perspective, fostering a deep appreciation for the arts and humanities.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Cheng pursued studies in Architecture at the University of Nottingham. During his second year, he contemplated shifting his focus to his true passion: cooking. However, upon the advice of a tutor, he chose to continue his architectural studies, seeking a way to integrate his love for culinary arts with his technical skills. This fusion of interests culminated in Cheng receiving First Degree Honours in his final year, as he explored the deeper meanings of food and its connection to human experience through both hand drawings and digital renderings. 

Cheng’s artistic endeavours are characterized by a profound introspection and a desire to challenge conventional perceptions. His works often delve into the complexities of the human psyche, exploring themes of identity, memory, and the subconscious. Through his art, Cheng invites viewers to embark on a journey of self-discovery, encouraging them to question their own perceptions and beliefs.

In addition to his visual art, Cheng has a keen interest in literature and philosophy, which further inform his creative practice. He often draws inspiration from existentialist thought and Eastern philosophies, weaving these influences into his work to create pieces that are both thought-provoking and evocative.

Currently, Cheng remotely manages the Sapporo branch of Alkemist Coffee and contributes as a writer for Tokyo Weekender magazine. He aspires to open his own restaurant/café, creating food that celebrates nature’s bounty and leaves indelible impressions on people’s memories. 

Through his multifaceted pursuits, Andy Cheng continues to explore the intersections of art, culture, and human experience, crafting a body of work that resonates with depth and authenticity.
